In case it isn’t obvious already, I have a deep passion for food (see here, here, and here). I love enjoying a homemade meal, trying new restaurants, stumbling upon little chocolateries… Like George Bernard Shaw once said, there is no love more sincere than the love of food. I could go on and on, but I think the article sums up my feelings pretty well.
So, with the above in mind, I made my first visit to Dean & DeLuca in Napa a few weekends ago (I know, I can’t believe I’ve never been). Let’s just say it was an overwhelming and extremely sensory experience. First of all, I walked in and they had a chocolate tasting table set up by the front door! What a wonderful welcome, am I right?
I spent the next half hour wandering around, admiring all the store had to offer. The amount of chocolate in one place – I couldn’t handle it! And all the beautiful packaging. Of course I had to buy some. I took home a Compartes bar (white chocolate and organic Matcha Green Tea), a Harper Macaw dark chocolate bar, and a Christopher Elbow macadamia nut bar.
We found fresh pastries, local jams and honey, flavored salts, decorated caramels… You name it! They also have a delicious deli where we picked up a couple things for lunch. I heard their sandwiches are delicious, but I went for a helping of the lobster pasta salad (no explanation necessary).
Thankfully, our cottage was close to Dean and Deluca so we returned the next day for breakfast. Mom decided on a matcha latte and I defaulted to a soy latte. They had so many pastries so we got a plain croissant and chocolate zucchini muffin to share.
The muffin was so good, very moist and rich. The croissant was yummy too, especially dipped in our lattes, but I have to say that I like Bouchon’s better. That being said, I felt very grateful to finally check out one of Napa’s esteemed institutions. I will be back!
