Our second and last day in Key West was busy. We knew it would be a short one so we decided to make the best of it. I kept a list of a few local spots I wanted to check out before we left and this was the day to do it!
Day Two in the Keys
Since we’re rarely on the East Coast, we thought we’d taken advantage of our geolocation and watch the sunrise. At 6 in the morning, we walked across the street from our hotel on to the quiet beach. To our surprise, the temperature was already warm. Before 7am, it was 70 degrees. Moreover, the sunrise was beautiful!
I love getting the day started early, it makes me feel so productive. Following our morning walk, we had coffee, hopped on the first shuttle headed downtown, and rented bikes – all before 9am!
We biked to Blue Heaven for breakfast, stopping several times along the way so I could take snapshots of Key West houses! (Feeling lucky to have family that is so patient with my incessant picture taking.) The restaurant was very cute – we felt like we were in a rainforest or something!
The rest of the day we spent riding around town, visiting local stores and admiring all the tropical Christmas decorations around town. I absolutely love a good front porch and Key West was full of them. Not only did every other house have a beautiful porch and stoop, but they were all so colorful. Houses came in pink, purple, teal… You name it! It was incredible. Furthermore, there was bougainvillea (one of my favorites) everywhere. Halfway through our morning, I realized I’d already taken over 400 photos, most of which were of houses!
Because we were leaving later that day, we returned our bikes around noon and ended our town tour with iced Cafe Con Leche from the famed Cuban Coffee Queen. It was a busy coffee stand tucked away behind the main marina. They even served Cuban sandwiches and other treats! I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a nice, local coffee joint.
Before we knew it, it was time to go. We had such a fun trip! If only there were more time to explore… The one place we didn’t get to on my list was Glazed Donuts. We’ll just have to go back again!
